Openness Toward God? {Weekend Heart Check}

On Fridays for the next while, I plan to post one of Jonathan Edwards’ Questions for Self-Examination. I have found them to be a helpful tool for keeping the heart, and I hope posting just one question each week along with accompanying thoughts and Scripture will be a blessing to you:
1. Do I manifest an attitude of openness toward God that would invite him to “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts”? (Psalm 139:23-24)
Or, do I have an attitude of secrecy, and try to hide the dark corners of my heart from the One who can bring them to light?
Do I try to hide as Adam and Eve hid in the garden, or do I run to Christ when I sin, knowing that as a child of God He has paid the price for it and I don’t have to fear his wrath or pretend to be perfect anymore?
Do I long to have my relationship with God restored when I fail, or do I prefer to keep my distance and refuse to admit my sin?
Do I long to become more and more like Christ, allowing God to cleanse me from every sin and sanctify me, knowing that even on my ‘good days’ there is more sin in my heart to be found?
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” {Psalm 139:1–12, 23-24 ESV}
